I’ve always felt very blessed to have moments in my life that bring incredible people and deep friendships my way. This past SXSW experience did just that: I was lucky to meet a young artist named Kevin Devine. We spent all of 30 minutes hanging out (in the street no less), and yet it was clear that there was some direct and naive, for lack of any other term, kinship.
I listened to his music when I got back to LA and my friend crush was clinched. Kevin has his own brand of honesty. I don’t know how else to say it. He simultaneously spills his guts and keeps you at arms length. Something I can relate to in such a deep way, that I had to offer myself up as a musician should he ever need an extra hand, voice or cheerleader.
Kevin asked me to play and sing on the first night of his residency at the Hotel Cafe on May 11th and I couldn’t be more thrilled. But not just because I know we will have a fucking blast on stage, but because I feel like it’s the beginning of an awesome creative connection.
Kevin and I are far from hippies, but a text he sent me a couple days ago sums it all up: “One baby to another says: “I’m glad I met you”. I’m glad I met you too Mr. Devine and I hope for all you L.A. folks, you can come and share a night of some incredible new music from his forthcoming LP, “Between the Concrete and the Clouds”.
