Kevin, Elliot and Morgan Oh My.

June 30, 2011 - Leave a Response

While Mr. Kevin Devine was in town a couple months ago for his Hotel Cafe Residency, I asked Mr. Elliot Glass if he would be interested in shooting a Little Videos session with him.  Naturally, the answer was a resounding yes… I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t think Kevin is a very special musician.

I have to say Elliot’s videos have become really special to me: they so clearly catch fleeting moments in time of being a young musician in L.A.  Once again I’m so proud to have participated.  As for Kevin and his new record, I just can’t say enough good about it. Watching these videos reminded me all over again how chilling these songs can be.

Enjoy.

The Flaming Lips

June 16, 2011 - One Response

Second fun post of the day….  Last night I finally got a chance to see Ray Suen (member of White Sea) play with the Flaming Lips as he is wont to do from time to freak out time.  They played “Dark Side of the Moon” and songs from “The Wizard of Oz” at the Hollywood Forever cemetery…doesn’t get much better than that.  It was the 3rd time I had the pleasure of seeing the Lips, and wedged between graves and mausoleums, they did not disappoint.

The Ladies

June 16, 2011 - One Response

I know shit gets pretty “arty” round here so I thought I would share the two apples of my current eye that happen to be a little more fun.  Enter Lady and Kreayshawn.  The fact of the matter is, I secretly wish I was making music like this.  One day…

I’m just gonna cut to the chase and post my two fave videos.  Happy Thursday everyone!  xm

I first saw Seonna’s work about 7 months ago at a small gallery in Echo Park and absolutely slobbered over every single piece in the space.  Seonna’s ability to capture the whimsical while imbuing it with layer upon layer of enigma, story and “what if” made her work something I frequently come back to when I need a jolt of inspiration. Enjoy!

+ Kevin Devine +

May 1, 2011 - Leave a Response

I’ve always felt very blessed to have moments in my life that bring incredible people and deep friendships my way. This past SXSW experience did just that: I was lucky to meet a young artist named Kevin Devine. We spent all of 30 minutes hanging out (in the street no less), and yet it was clear that there was some direct and naive, for lack of any other term, kinship.

I listened to his music when I got back to LA and my friend crush was clinched. Kevin has his own brand of honesty. I don’t know how else to say it. He simultaneously spills his guts and keeps you at arms length. Something I can relate to in such a deep way, that I had to offer myself up as a musician should he ever need an extra hand, voice or cheerleader.

Kevin asked me to play and sing on the first night of his residency at the Hotel Cafe on May 11th and I couldn’t be more thrilled. But not just because I know we will have a fucking blast on stage, but because I feel like it’s the beginning of an awesome creative connection.

Kevin and I are far from hippies, but a text he sent me a couple days ago sums it all up: “One baby to another says: “I’m glad I met you”. I’m glad I met you too Mr. Devine and I hope for all you L.A. folks, you can come and share a night of some incredible new music from his forthcoming LP, “Between the Concrete and the Clouds”.

Elliot Glass

Elliot is a master genius of indie band chronicling…  I was lucky enough to participate in The Broken Remotes session with Elliot a few years back and now White Sea has it’s very own EG videos!  Enjoy… This was a real good time.  (FYI shot it my tiny ass apt. don’t mind the chachkis)

I highly encourage you to check out his work… not only does it sound and look impeccable, Elliot has managed to capture something really special about Los Angeles music culture.  I could spend hours on his site (and have). Super proud to have finally done one of these, makes me feel like I’m a part of something… xm

Remixes Vol. I : Estate

April 9, 2011 - One Response

Overdrawn is perhaps the weirdest song on White Sea’s EP “This Frontier”.  Estate took the song and made it special.  Like really special.  When I got the MP3, I started jumping up and down in my apartment, totally elated. Gone was the indie pop, in was the 80s dance revival: perfection!

Hailing from Minneapolis, this duo is ridiculously talented.  I’m chomping at the bit to post these remixes, but suffice to say, the work Estate did on Overdrawn makes it worth the wait…

Remixes Vol. 1 : Lord Huron

March 28, 2011 - One Response

Well, I think it’s obvious that I’m a big fan of Ben’s new project Lord Huron.  (See previous posts!) Ben was gracious enough to do a remix exchange with me, (the WS remix to be announced soon…) and hence Mountaineer got the Lord Huron special treatment.

What’s there to say that I haven’t already?  It’s been an incredible experience handing over the EP songs to artists I trust and admire for re-workings.  Lord Huron’s take on Mountaineer was no exception.  Somehow the remix manages to take us somewhere completely foreign and yet the song remains intact in all it’s wanderlust.

Lord Huron is currently touring, so if you can go check them out in your local venues, I HIGHLY suggest doing so.

Mountaineer on MTVu

March 27, 2011 - Leave a Response

The day has finally come!  White Sea’s music video for “Mountaineer” is playing throughout the next 24 hours on MTVu: I pray you like it, I pray you think it’s the shiz: I’m very nervous, very excited.  (Is it possible to smile while throwing up?)  My sister actually just called me from NYC to say she saw it – followed by a Radiohead video.  All I can say is…  WHAT?!?!  This whole day will be quite surreal, so I’ll just say  how proud I am of my friends and family (said sister is one of the video’s starlets).

We got drunk, we got dirty, we jumped fences…  It was a good day.  I hope you enjoy our efforts, because we had a lot of fun making the video.
